CANADA: New Targeted Pathways to Permanent Residency

Pathways to permanent residency provide skilled workers and international students with the ability to remain in Canada permanently. This article explores the recent programs that the Canadian Government has introduced to encourage immigration and permanent residency due to the challenges of COVID-19.

Temporary Resident to Permanent Resident Pathway

This Temporary Resident to Permanent Resident program closed on November 5, 2021 and is no longer accepting applications. This page will be updated if a similar program is introduced.

In 2021, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced a new pathway for essential workers and international graduates currently in Canada that provides them with an opportunity to obtain permanent residency. This is said to encompass 90,000 people who are currently contributing to the Canadian economy.

To be eligible for the new pathway from temporary resident to permanent residency, applicants must have the following:

Health-care workers Permanent Residence Pathway

This pathway to permanent residence in Canada is specific to refugees to recognize the contributions they have made to Canada throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Permanent Resident Pathway for Hong Kong Residents

The Permanent Resident Pathway for Hong Kong Residents was initiated in response to the ongoing concern for Hong Kong nationals due to the tension between Hong Kong and China. This Pathway provides Hong Kong nationals with an opportunity to gain permanent residency in Canada. There are two streams:

The Permanent Resident Pathway for Hong Kong Residents was initiated under public policy, which is in effect from June 1, 2021, to August 31, 2026.
